Integrating Learning Skills into Your Class or Study
11:05-12:05 / LA 204
Presenter: Dan Kimball
Description of workshop: How to use 13 learning skills to succeed in any college or university level course. These help students make the transition from secondary education to college level. I have many years experience using these skills to help students be successful in math based classes. Many students come back and tell me the learning skills were more important than the content I taught them. Overlapping learning skills with content is the best way to go.

Students as Error Detectives (for their writing)
8:45-9:45 / LA 204
Presenter: Susan McQuerry
Description of workshop: Students must write essays/research papers for their English/ESL classes and for other subjects as well. It is often difficult for them to find and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. One activity that has become popular with my students is what I call an “Error Correction” exercise.
I present sentences gleaned from their essays, sentences with the most common errors I’ve found overall. Using the “code” of English proofreaders’ marks, they pair up and search for errors to correct. They enjoy it because they work with a partner and because they earn a decent amount of points for being “good detectives.”
